How to make your staircase stand out

Your hallway is often the first impression of your home to guests, so it makes sense that you’d want it to stand out and reflect the rest of your home décor in the best possible way. Here’s a few tips on how to make your staircase stand out and some great examples we’ve seen along the way that you can use for inspiration.

Stair material

In terms of the material to cover your stairs with, carpet or wood are certainly the most popular options. When it comes to stairs, safety is obviously paramount and as wood can be slippery we would recommend that you have a carpet runner going up the middle. To make it stand out, you could try incorporating a colourful geometric style pattern to make it really eye-catching, like this example.

Staircase design

If you have the luxury of being able to design your own staircase, you could add features that help the aesthetic of your home, such as having it turn to an angle at the bottom if you don’t want your staircase facing a door. This is actually pretty important for Feng Shui in a room, as having your staircase facing the front door has a lot of negative energy.

Lights

Lighting your staircase is a definite winner when it comes to making your staircase stand out, and doesn’t have to be a budget breaker either. Placing small spotlights in the wall on alternating steps is an elegant way to light your way, and we also love this LED lighting under the bannister for a contemporary look and feel.

Bannister

For safety reasons, you need to have a bannister or a handrail on your stairs, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. There are plenty of ways to make the bannister on your staircase stand out. A very modern approach is to have glass balustrade panels on your staircase, for a clean, open look, and we love this industrial chic idea of reusing pipes to create a unique hand rail for outdoor stairs.

Unique twists

Making your home unique is one of the perks of being a homeowner, so feel free to experiment with the design of your stairs as you would with any other room. There are some great examples of creative homeowners using their staircases to highlight favourite books or inspirational quotes by stencilling these or using decals to fix to the on to the stairs to really make them stand out in a creative way. You could also choose to colour this part of your stairs a different shade to the rest of your hallway décor to really make them stand out.

Stair storage

Just because you’ve made them look beautiful, doesn’t mean that your stairs can’t be practical too – and for this we of course mean adding hidden storage. If there’s one thing we all need it’s more storage space, so just check out these clever ideas for keeping things hidden by your stairs until you need them.
