How to use wooden flooring as a stunning feature wall

Anyone with a keen interest in home interiors will no doubt be aware of the trend for wooden plank effect wallpaper used as a feature wall to great effect. This style was embraced very quickly as the trend for using naturally sourced materials in our home décor really took off, and of course it doesn’t hurt that this effect can instantly transform a room into a cosy, warm and inviting space to be, whether it’s a bedroom or a living area.

One of the disadvantages of this trend though is that using wallpaper to create this effect can sometimes look a bit artificial, and even with luxury wallpapers the end result still looks quite fake. For that reason, we think if you want to create this look in your own home the only way to do it is use wooden flooring as a stunning feature wall, and leave the wallpapers out of it.

Why should you do it?

Using the planks as a feature wall is a fantastic idea for many reasons – it’s very on trend at the moment, it can help you create the illusion of more space in your room depending on the direction of the boards (horizontal for making a small room seem wider and vertical for drawing the eye up towards the ceiling), and it’s also a fantastic insulator.

How can you do it?

There are a few things to consider –

Check the wall you plan to install the planks on. It needs to be smooth and straight – just like laying a floor, otherwise it will buckle and look uneven.

Make sure the wall can support the weight of the planks – it’s not advisable to do this on a stud wall.

You will need to engage the services of a professional joiner if you don’t have experience in installing flooring yourself.

Normal rules of laying floors apply here – measure the amount you need, buy the boards and allow them to acclimatise in the room, and follow the installation instructions.

Here’s a great tutorial which talks you through each stage if you want to try and do this yourself.

Where should you do it?

The beauty of this trend is that it looks great anywhere in the home – and the end result can be as contemporary or as rustic as you like depending on the choice of boards used. It also instantly adds an authentic feel to your décor that you just can’t achieve with a wallpaper. Perhaps you’d like to try this in the bedroom, and pair with lots of textured throws and pillows to create a comfortable cosy room, just like this? Or, you might want to add some interest to your living room or dining room – this design is very eye-catching and certainly a unique addition to your room. If you would prefer to start small with this trend and see how you like it, how about creating a cosy little reading nook with wooden flooring walls instead?
