Engineered wood flooring does offer some water resistance but it is not waterproof. It is more resistant to damage from water than real wood flooring because of the way it is made and the way the boards are fitted closely together, especially those that have a click and lock method. It is recommended that any spillages are mopped up and pooling water can seep between even the most closely fitting planks.
Engineered wood flooring is real wood veneer which is fused to a soft wooden or plywood core. The top layer is made from real solid wood, This is the wear layer and comes in the different species of wood, carrying the wood grain and colour. Then there is a a backing layer which helps stabilise the wooden planks. The top layer comes in a range of thicknesses and this will determine the longevity of the flooring and how much it can be sanded back and refinished.
Although engineered flooring is not a 100% solid wood product, it does possess a number of advantages over real wood flooring. Sold wood is of course one piece of wood cut into planks, whereas engineered wood flooring is a thick wood veneer fused to a plywood or softwood core. Once installed, it is impossible to differentiate between the two products as it is the same real wood top which is visible that can still be sanded and refinished.
As a solid wood floor is a 100% natural wood from top to bottom it can be more susceptible to the effects of moisture and temperature change which can cause the planks to cup, warp, swell and split. Due to engineered wood having a multi-ply base the product is strengthened and offers greater stability to moisture and heat in comparison to a solid wood floor.
