Best Flooring for a Loft Conversion

If you are thinking of adding an extra room to your home by converting your loft, then a vital aspect you need to consider is your flooring.  Even if your loft or attic is already boarded out, it is likely you will need to reinforce the floor with stronger joists. This means the whole floor has to come up, which offers you the perfect opportunity to think about the final look you are keen to achieve with your floor.

Hardwood Flooring in Bedroom

Preparation

First, you need to assess the space you have. How is the space going to be used? Before you lay your flooring, it is the perfect time to cable the space. If you’re planning on having broadband, electricity or telephone cables in your attic room then consider laying such before your new floor goes down.

The underfloor area will need to be insulated and boarded out before laying the visible flooring.

Pick a flooring that helps to enhance the sense of space.

Hardwood

If you are wanting to create a modern-style loft, then your best option might be a hardwood flooring. If you have beams or joists exposed, a wooden floor would be the perfect complement. Solid wood would be great for flooring your loft as it is available in a wide range of colours so you can choose one which will help you to create the right atmosphere. A deep honey colour will help create a warmer look to the room. Interlocked boards will help to create a smooth finish or if you prefer the rustic look, opt for individual boards.

Carpet

If you’d prefer something a little softer underfoot, choose carpet flooring. Ideal if you are using your loft conversion for an extra bedroom, it is warmer and safer, therefore a particularly good selection for a child’s bedroom. Also, if you are looking to keep prices low then its a cheaper option than most. If you are looking for something particularly soft and cosy then why not choose a thick pile. You can seek out a carpet that blends with the colour scheme in your new room and the carpet will also help dampen the sound of footsteps and music.

Laminate

If you are planning on using your loft conversion for a playroom or an office, then laminate flooring may be the better option as it is a lot cheaper option than hardwood. It is available in a wide range of wood styles and colours, again making it a lot easier to create the look you have in mind.

  • I don’t own the property that I live in – I live in a small flat. But that doesn’t stop me from planning the interiors of my future home. For the loft, I would go with hardwood floor as I think it will help enhance the room. It will create that atmosphere of a secret room, something that is only yours. Adding a few rugs will add the needed comfort, in my opinion.
