What is Engineered Wood Flooring?

Engineered wood flooring has become increasingly popular in recent years as an alternative to hardwood flooring and laminate. But what is engineered wood flooring and could it be the right choice for your home? Here at Discount Flooring Depot, we’ve created a guide for all you need to know.

What is Engineered Wood Flooring?

First thing’s first; what is engineered wood flooring and how does it differ to solid wood flooring? Engineered wood flooring is made up of an HDF (high-density fibre) or plywood core with a solid hardwood veneer glued on top. This process provides all the natural characteristics and beauty of solid wood while offering greater stability to environmental conditions such as heat and humidity that can sometimes cause solid hardwood to warp or shrink.

How is it Made?

Engineered wood flooring is made by stacking several layers of thin plywood or HDF perpendicular over one another. Each of the layers of plywood and the solid hardwood veneer is then bonded together with adhesive and the planks are milled with tongues and grooves for installation, before being finished and sealed. This method, due to the crossing direction of the grain, is what provides engineered wood flooring with greater protection to the effects of temperature change and moisture in the air and results in its greater stability level.

Why Choose Engineered Wood Flooring?

Engineered wood flooring has become a popular choice for homes for a few different key reasons. Though not a 100% solid wood product, it poses a number of advantages over real wood and other flooring alternatives. We’ve listed a few of its benefits to consider below:

  • As mentioned, it provides the appearance of coveted hardwood while its multi-ply core offers superior stability.

  • It is easier to install than hardwood and can be fitted over both dry wood and concrete sub-floors.

  • It has less of an environmental impact, helping to preserve exotic wood resources by using a quarter of the materials than solid flooring.

  • Its solid veneer top provides you with the option to sand and re-finish your floor several times throughout its lifespan, ensuring its beauty and solid floor aesthetic can be appreciated for years to come.
