Understand undertone

Colour is made up of a mass tone and an undertone. At first glance, the mass tone tells you what colour you’re looking at. At second glance, the undertone becomes clearer as you enjoy and appreciate the whole room. For example, a dark wood floor with a white chair feels different to the same floor with a black chair. The undertone of the dark wood needs to be balanced with light furniture, otherwise the room will feel dark and heavy.

Don’t go against the grain

The grain of your wood will define the mood of the room, so keeping to a similar grain will help pull different woods together and create a space that isn’t hard to look at. Having a theme such as ‘rustic’ will help you here.

Use a buffer

Your wood table is beautiful and your wood floor is stunning – but put the two together and you’ve got an overwhelming flood of wood that fills the view and draws attention to the differences between the two. Instead, use a buffer. Whether it’s a rug or a carpet, it’ll divide the two woods and the eye can appreciate both the table and your floor working in magnificent harmony. Plus, you have the chance to choose a pattern to suit, adding to the design and pulling your personal style together.

Avoid having too much

Two or three different wood finishes work best, especially in a smaller room. If you live in a castle you have a tad more free rein. You can mix and match the woods which will elegantly project each colour tone around the room, creating balance in your wood-filled universe.

Know the power of white

If you are a wood fanatic and have accidentally turned your beloved home into a full-on forest, then consider the power of white. White will break up the heavy wood tones beautifully. White is to wood as a pig is to… mud. Whether you opt for a white piece of furniture, a white piece of art or simply a large white wall – it’ll bring balance to and help you navigate your sprawling forest.
